What is an evaporative cooling pad?

Evaporative cooling pads are the core component of direct evaporative cooling systems. These pads are made from specially engineered materials—most commonly highly absorbent cellulose kraft paper—and are chemically treated with wetting agents and preservatives to ensure long-term durability. The paper is corrugated at specific angles and bonded together to form a robust, self-supporting structure with a large surface area that facilitates water evaporation.

As exhaust fans draw hot, dry outdoor air through these saturated pads, the water evaporates. This evaporation process absorbs heat energy from the air, naturally cooling and humidifying the incoming air without the need for an external energy source. It is a natural cooling process now applied in modern agriculture.

I. Cooling Performance

Modern evaporative cooling pads can achieve saturation efficiencies of 80% or higher. In practical terms, under typical Midwestern U.S. summer conditions, this means the intake air temperature can be reduced by 5 to 15°F (approx. 2.7 to 8°C), with a typical daytime wet-bulb depression of 14 to 20°F (approx. 7 to 11°C). In hotter, drier climates, the cooling effect is even more pronounced.

Cooling efficiency depends on several factors: intake air velocity, pad thickness, and ambient temperature and humidity. With proper system design, these pads can consistently and effectively lower temperatures to levels required for livestock and crop growth.

II. High-Quality Cellulose Structure

Premium cooling pads are manufactured using saturation-grade kraft paper that is highly absorbent and stabilized with resins. The cellulose paper undergoes a special impregnation process to ensure the pads possess the following characteristics:

This unique design continuously directs more water to the air-intake side of the cooling pad—the area where the air is hottest and driest, and where cooling is most needed.
